Lucknow, Aug 13 : The Uttar Pradesh DGP Vijay Kumar has claimed the success of ‘Operation Conviction’ that was launched with the vision of increasing the conviction rate of criminals.

A total of 471 accused in different crime cases were convicted in a span of 30 days starting July 1 in a special drive launched and personally monitored by the DGP.

The DGP said on Saturday those convicted include three who have been given death penalty and 149 who were awarded life terms by the court.

He said maximum convictions were in cases of crime against children in which 242 people were convicted under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act).

Kumar added that under ‘Operation Conviction’, crimes related to women, murder, robbery, dacoity, cow slaughter, religion conversion, and those related to listed mafia elements along with other sensational crimes have been included.

“Operation Conviction was conducted in the entire state and the technical services headquarters is creating a portal for it, which will not only serve as a database but also provide details of progress of a case and if a case is pending then the reasons”, he said.

The DGP made a special mention of four cases in which a charge sheet and conviction was done in a month in Bhadohi, Balrampur and one by GRP Prayagraj.

He said, “In a POCSO Act case registered on July 12, the accused was arrested on the same day and the court pronounced the sentence in Bhadohi within 11 days.”

In six other cases, the charge sheet and conviction was done in two months.

Citing a case, Kumar said that a four-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Bulandshahr. Police acted swiftly by arresting the accused Faheem in less than 24 hours and filed a charge sheet in 10 days.

“The SP continued to pursue the case in the court on priority,” the DGP said. The court pronounced the death sentence within two months. The DGP said that in the three cases of death penalty sentences achieved in 60 days, the investigator and the court lawyer concerned will be awarded the commendation disc.”
